2026 Sleeper Games

Every week in the season there are hyped matchups. The kinds of games Gameday and Big Noon Kickoff are at that get heaps of national coverage.

But every week, there are also games that don’t get as much attention or buzz but absolutely deliver what you are looking for in a great college football game. Often they get overlooked because they’re on weird networks or in awkward time slots or just don’t involve big brands.

So for each week in the 2026 season, I’ve highlighted one under the radar game that will be on my watch list. It could be a rivalry renewed, a potential upset, a game that may sneakily have CFP implications, or could just be some damn good football. Nevertheless, these 13 games should be worth tuning in for.

Week 1 – UCLA at Cal

An old, mostly friendly Pac-10 rivalry revisited when the Bruins head north to Berkeley to visit the Golden Bears for a limited run week 1 after-dark special. Lots of intrigue here with 2 first year-head coaches and 2 potential star quarterbacks in Nico Iamaleava and Jaron-Keawe Saqopolutele. Both Bob Chesney and Tosh Lupoi can’t start their tenures off with wins and whomever comes out of this one with a W could get some early hype as a sleeper team in their respective conference.

Runner-Up: Miami (OH) at Pitt

Week 2 – Arizona at BYU

This matchup could set the table for the Big 12 title race in 2026. Brent Brennan leads the Wildcats into an always hostile environment in Provo looking for a win that would vault them into serious contender status in the conference. The matchup to watch here is stud Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita going up against Kalani Sitake’s vaunted, experienced, and physical Cougar defense.

Runner-Up: Memphis at Boise State

Week 3 – Florida at Auburn

Two first-year headmen collide at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Week 3 as both squads play their first conference game of the season. The major storyline here is Jon Sumrall visiting the school he passed over to go to Gainesville which should bring a lively and raucous crowd. Both the Gators and Alex Golesh’s Tigers are trying to jumpstart their programs back to life, meaning whoever wins this one will be on a trajectory to do just that.

Runner-Up: Virginia Tech at Maryland

Week 4 – San Diego State at Toledo

A cheeky out of conference G6 battle between preseason conference championship contenders in the PAC-12 and the MAC. This one could go a long way in proving MAC eligibility for the G6 playoff spot if the Rockets are able to pull out the win. The matchup to watch here should be how well 1000-yard rusher San Diego native Lucky Sutton and the Aztecs are able to run the ball against the Toledo front headlined by DE Andrew Zock.

Runner-Up: Clemson at Cal

Week 5 – Penn State at Northwestern

Matt Campbell’s men travel to Evanston seeking to spoil the party as Northwestern opens new Ryan Field for Big Ten play. Expect the Nittany Lions to be large double-digit favorites in this one, but I’m calling my shot on the upset here. Penn State fans don’t normally fill out Northwestern’s confines like other B1G teams do so expect it to be a decisively purple-clad crowd especially with the grand opening. We’ll see if the Wildcats’ lake effect voodoo travels with them to their new digs.

Runner-Up: Michigan at Minnesota

Week 6 – Texas A&M at Missouri

The theme of this game for me is SEC credibility. Both teams will be seeking that going into this season as some say A&M took advantage of their weak conference schedule last year and others say Mizzou can’t beat any legitimate conference foes and farm wins off the bottom of the SEC. The Aggies are likely to be favored here, but I see this as more of a pick ’em if Tigers’ quarterback Austin Simmons can show some solid, consistent play through the first 5 weeks of the season.

Runner-Up: Houston at Kansas State

Week 7 – Virginia at SMU

Outside of Miami this year, the ACC seems to be wide open to predict whoever you like to meet the Hurricanes in Charlotte. For me, these are my top 2 candidates. I definitely lean towards SMU in this one as the Mustangs are coming off of a bye week while the Hoos plays their 6th week in a row. Regardless of the outcome, this one shouldn’t be short on entertainment value with a quarterback matchup of Beau Pribula and Kevin Jennings.

Runner-Up: Arizona State at Texas Tech

Week 8 – USC at Wisconsin

Luke Fickell is visited by the program he was rumored to be the next head coach of just a handful of years ago. How fast things have changed in college football and for Fickell as there’s definitely a chance he’s not coaching at all for this one. No matter who is at the helm for the Badgers, I see an upset alert here with Lincoln Riley’s squad traveling east for the second time in 3 weeks. Who knows, maybe USC has a coaching change as well before this one kicks off.

Runner-Up: LSU at Auburn

Week 9 – Arizona at Texas Tech

Can the Arizona schools be the only ones to knock off Texas Tech in the regular season 2 years in a row? Or could Joey McGuire’s team already have picked up an L this year and be at risk of being on the outside looking in after this one? I at least see the Wildcats having the advantage at quarterback here over the Red Raiders’ Will Hammond. However, Hammond should have an easier time moving the ball in this one while Noah Fifita and his offense are tasked with solving this stout Texas Tech defense.

Runner-Up: Army at Memphis

Week 10 – Texas at Missouri

The most anticipated week of the 2026 season has some incredible games at the top of the ticket but also so much depth on the schedule, especially in the SEC. I’m highlighting a late October visit to Columbia for the Longhorns as they could be heavily bloodied and bruised coming off the meat of their schedule and looking forward to a meeting in Baton Rouge the following weekend. The question may come down to whether the Tigers have much to play for at this point of the season. Nevertheless, I think Drink and Co. should put up a valiant fight.

Runner-Up: Oklahoma at Florida

Week 11 – Alabama at Vanderbilt

It seems like almost everyone is writing off Vanderbilt this year and forecasting a significant step back following the departure of many core pieces such as Diego Pavia and Eli Stowers. However, what if that isn’t the case? Could Jared Curtis be exactly the kind of prospect he’s been touted as and keep the ‘Dores in the top half of the SEC? Despite if Curtis has a special freshman season or not, I’ll definitely be tuning in with the fireworks this matchup has produced in recent years both on and off the field.

Runner-Up: Utah at Arizona

Week 12 – Pitt at Louisville

This could be a deciding matchup for who makes and falls just short of the ACC Championship game and a shot at a CFP bid. While neither are the odds on favorite to win the conference, losing this game at this point in the season will likely eliminate either of these teams from any playoff consideration. With those potential stakes and sophomore Mason Heintschel on one side battling Lincoln Kienholz and Isaac Brown on the other, it should be worth the watch.

Runner-Up: UCLA at Michigan

Week 13 – LSU at Arkansas

The Battle for the Golden Boot is one of the more underrated rivalries in the country to me. Despite the difference in quality of these programs in recent history, only 1 of the last 6 meetings has been decided by more than a field goal. At this point in the season, will Lane Kiffin and LSU be in line to lock up a CFP bid with a win? Will Arkansas have anything to play for other than ruining their rival’s season? Motivation shouldn’t be an issue here for Ryan Silverfield’s guys regardless of record. Sounds like must-see TV to me.
